Make improving study habits an experiment—on themselves.

Are your students certain that it doesn’t matter whether they do their homework with the TV on, their phone nearby with all social networking apps sending notifications, or right after school versus late at night? Run some experiments in class or in advisory groups to test their beliefs.

You can do the following activity in a couple of ways: (1) Save some time in class to start homework, with you working at your desk in parallel mode. Or (2) find some games or brainteasers, the kind that require concentration, have time limits, and give a score, such as Boggle, Scattegories, or a memory game with cards or objects (spread out 10–20 cards or objects to remember within a minute or two; have a towel or scarf handy to cover them). If you have tablets or computers, you can use or project the online SET game daily puzzle. The game doesn’t have a time limit, but you can give it one. Over time, use visual as well as verbal games. We encourage students to contribute games, puzzles, and ideas from their backgrounds. When you use this activity, on some days, have a quiet, well-lit environment. On other days, add some variables:

Play music, especially music with lyrics, loud enough to reach the whole room.

Set your cell phone to go off repeatedly and frequently as you walk around the room.

Say that today will be a competition against each other and the clock. Project a large ticking countdown clock on the board or use a timer that can be heard easily.

Allow them to work with a partner.
